Join Intrepid Fly as we take you to experience the best river and stillwater trout fishing in South Africa. For over 20 years we have travelled all over our beautiful country in search of both trophy trout and pristine destinations. Intrepid Fly and our guides can confidently put you onto the most renowned rivers and still water systems in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Natal and Mpumalanga. We have had the good fortune of fishing with some of the best guides on their own door steps, and now we would like to take you there ourselves for you to experience the very best in fishing for both rainbows and browns wherever you fancy.

Our guides (REFFIS accredited) will take you out for weekends away so as to catch fish and improve on your casting, presentation, techniques, fly selection, reading of the water and entomology. We will be hosting a number of weekends away in the beginning and the end of the season at our preferred fisheries to share our experiences with you and fellow anglers (September to November and April to May).

South Africa offers a unique range of trout fishing to all fly fishermen. Whether you are just getting started, or have vast experience, we can take you all over the country to target browns and rainbows on a range of the best fisheries.

The Fisheries

Intrepid Western Cape
The Western Cape is certainly home to one of our most preferred river systems, typified by small crystal clear streams. Having been one of the first river systems to be stocked with browns and rainbows, the trout population has thrived over the past 100 years. With careful management and conservation, rivers like the Elandspad, Witte, Holsloot, Smaalblaar and numerous ‘secret rivers’ have become synonymous with small stream tactics. These rivers appeal to both the novice and the expert. Intrepid Fly will host weekends, where we will be centrally based on a beautiful wine farm in Franschoek and have the opportunity to fish a few of the surrounding rivers. Based on your experience and desirable species (browns or rainbows), we will host and guide you across the rivers that we feel are fishing best at the time of your booking. Day trips are also available on request.

Intrepid Eastern Cape
We have grown extremely fond of the rivers in the Rhodes area over the years. The area is overseen by committed members of the South African fishing community and the farmers who care for these pristine waters. Rhodes, to a large extent, has been overlooked by most anglers because of its apparent inaccessibility. However, if you are prepared to travel that much further, you will be pleasantly rewarded. Often described by the great South African fly fishermen and authors, rivers like the Bell, Kraai, Sterkspruit, Bokspruit, Willow and Rifflespriut offer what can be considered the best river fishing in the country. Intrepid Fly will be hosting a number of weekends with renowned Fred Steynberg who has extensive knowledge of the area and the tactics required to land large trout and yellow fish. You will be based in the quaint town of Rhodes, close the rivers, and suggestions on where to fish will be made based on the water levels and time of the year. Intrepid fly will be hosting a number of academies and weekends at this destination over the year.

Intrepid Underberg
Considered one of the best locations for large trout and bountiful rivers, Intrepid Fly has spent many years exploring the vast river systems and still waters that this area offers. This provides for an awesome weekend away, whether you are travelling from Durban or Johannesburg. You will be based on a beautiful farm which offers both still water and river fishing along the Umzimkulu River. You will also have the opportunity to fish the surrounding waters that Intrepid Fly has access to including some still waters that have produced some of the biggest trout in South Africa. There are numerous other activities like hiking and horse riding available. Intrepid fly will be hosting a number of academies and weekends at this destination over the year.

Intrepid Kamberg
This is a region Intrepid Fly has had extensive time to fish. Aside from some of the fisheries in Mpumalanga, this must be considered the best and closest fishery to those living in Gauteng, which is a mere 4 hours from Johannesburg. The area boasts large still waters and numerous rivers like the Mooi, The Little Mooi, the Bushman’s and the Loteni are synonymous with the region. Intrepid Fly will be based on a private farm in a 4 star lodge which offers numerous dams and 7 kilometres of the Little Mooi. There are various other areas to fish surrounding the farm, all offering fishing for both the novice and the expert. This venue is an ideal weekend retreat. Intrepid fly will be hosting a number of academies and weekends at this destination over the year.

Intrepid Mpumalanga
This area has grown significantly in popularity, especially Dullstroom, Machadodorp, Belfast and surrounding areas. The area offers a large variety of still water fishing on private waters, and some challenging river fishing. Intrepid Fly will be taking our clients for weekends away to some of the private farm in the region, where you will have access to what we regard as the most pristine rivers and dams in the area, offering trophy sized rainbows and browns. The waters are challenging and provides for all anglers. Intrepid fly will be hosting a number of academies and weekends at this destination over the year.

Season

The still water fisheries are open all year round. The river systems are traditionally open from September through to May, with the best months being September to November and March to May based on water temperatures. The winter months may be closed to the river systems, but are an ideal time for the still water fisheries.
