Hi :name:
Catch Report
Recently Intrepid Fly sent groups to the Zambezi, Mozambique, Lesotho and around South Africa.
The Upper Zambezi season is coming to a close with most operators looking back on the year as not being one of the best. Though many tigers and bream species were landed there were not as many double figures on fly as we would have hoped for. Earlier this month one of our clients landed a 17 lb tiger on fly, with a wireless leader set up. This was a lodge record and certainly one of the largest ever in the region. Other great catches included a couple 10 - 12 lb tigers and 5 - 6 lb nembwe on fly.
We spent a week in the Bazaruto Archipelago targeting giant trevally and sailfish. Though the conditions looked perfect, the cooler water did nothing for the fishing. There were marlin in the area but we were only lucky in landing a 35kg sailfish and a few smaller GT’s . This is testament to the region being a “lottery” and we suggest that if you can stay longer this will greatly improve your chances of getting into more fish. The upcoming months will be hot but will be the best time for the GT’s.
The Vaal River has been producing a number of smallmouth yellowfish but the wet weather in Johannesburg has resulted in varying conditions. The guiding was put on hold for a number of days as we waited for the water levels to drop and the visibility to improve. The fishery is showing continued signs of improvement and according to the local’s, promises to be a great season. Another fishery to consider is the Sterkfontein Dam where we will be hosting a few weekends away for you to have the chance to sight fish for smallmouth yellowfish.
The trout season is upon us. The Western Cape streams have struggled with high levels of water make some streams nearly impossible to fish. This will certainly be a good thing for the months ahead. The Rhodes region is enjoying the best fishing it has had this year producing a number of 18 - 24 inch rainbow trout. The Mpumalanga region is also benefiting from the good rains with the dams and streams being very productive. Fred Steynberg has had a lot of success with a few groups in Lesotho and is fast becoming one of his favourite destinations.
Intrepid Fly was also proud to host more corporate fly-fishing trips. Thank you again to the client (British Telecom Global) and the guides involved ... a successful formula that is fast becoming recognised as a means of spoiling clients and staff and generating further business. Intrepid Fly has opened up a number of exciting venues for this purpose both locally and abroad.
